Green Lantern 2 Will Be “Edgier and Darker with More Emphasis on Action” with A New Director

What did you think of the first Green Lantern film premiered few months ago? Regardless of what your opinions are, Green Lantern was in fact a huge disappointment for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment – The total sales could not cover the big-budget spent on this biggest tent-pole franchise superhero movie. Warner Bros. was reported to spend approximately $200 million dollars making the flick but so far it is only banking around $114 millions both domestically and internationally. This bitter fact definitely drops a Krypton-sized bomb for the crews.

Despite of the commercial and box office performance failure, Warner Bros. has been intent on moving to a future sequel called Green Lantern 2. Last we heard that the upcoming Lantern film will not be directed by the previous director, Martin Campbell, and it will remain so. We perhaps have spotted on the weak script, storyline and character development on the last Green Lantern. It might be the reason why they changed the director. Odd who knows! Above all, the executives believed that the core problem was in execution, not concept.

Via The Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros. film group President Jeff Robinoy indicated a brand new strategy, “To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action and we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.” As far as it sounds, the strategy looks okay for me. I am more interested how they will implement this new approach on the upcoming sequel. What do you say?

In addition to the new “edgier and darker” story, Warner Bros. has hired writer Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim to pen some significant changes on the current Lantern’s script outline. Green Lantern 2 is supposed to zoom on the theaters late 2013 or some time in 2014, just after the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel.
